A background in fine and decorative arts
Charles “Charlie” Potters also works as a research consultant with Nye & Company. His role includes helping clients assess their collections and researching pieces that are difficult to identify or value. He has spent more than 55 years studying and collecting fine and decorative arts.
His interests include rare watches, American silver, Americana and folk art, Chinese porcelain and jade, scientific instruments and mechanical objects. He has worked with both individual pieces and larger collections, drawing on their history and design to put them in context.
Before his current auction-house work, Charlie spent more than 30 years in capital markets, where his work included research and teaching. Throughout that career, he continued to collect and study art and antiques.

In 2019, Charlie helped identify Breguet No. 1030. He compared the watch with an earlier auction record and requested information from Breguet’s archives. The research helped establish its rarity and connect it with the original purchaser’s family.
The watch later sold at Nye & Company for $90,625, including the buyer’s premium. The case shows how auction records, manufacturer archives and an object’s ownership history can contribute to its identification.
